No Quiet Hinterland – Resistance in the Mountains

The commemorative events organized by APC differ from many similar projects and initiatives in one crucial respect, because they link remembrance and commemoration with a very specific topographical formation: the mountains. The commemorative hikes, which commemorate the flight of thousands of Jews over the Krimmler Tauern every year, are therefore a very special form of remembrance of the Nazi era and its aftermath.

However, the mountainous regions of Europe not only played an important role in the flight movements after the liberation in 1945 but also formed a retreat and agitation space for those who resisted the Nazi regime. In 2022, APC will therefore focus on this complex of topics under the motto “No quiet hinterland – resistance in the mountains”.

Optional: Friday, July 1, 2022, 4:00 p.m.: Commemoration at the memorial for the former Givat Avoda DP camp in front of the Anton Wallner barracks in Saalfelden

No separate registration is required for the commemoration in Saalfelden. More information on this event will follow soon.

Sunday, July 3, 2022, from 6:00 a.m. Memorial Hike

On our commemorative hike, we follow the traces of the flight of 1947, crossing the Krimmler Tauern and hiking to Kasern in South Tyrol/Alto Adige. The hike leads through high alpine terrain up to an altitude of 2,634 m. The pure walking time is approx. 8 hours. Appropriate physical condition, weather protection, drinksand snacks are required!

Alternatively, two shorter variants are possible, which are less strenuous and turn round and go back the same way before crossing the pass.

Please note that you have to decide on one of the options when registering and that no last-minute changes are possible, as we have to plan the respective transfers with taxis and buses in advance.
